We’re looking for a real expert in Big Data to join one of the World’s biggest names in telecoms and media. This isn’t your typical Data position though. As despite looking for someone who has experience within Big Data, it’s best described as a consulting engagement. Sitting between the technology division and the end users of the data (so no coding required). Understanding the 3-5 year landscape for data within the business and advising the business on what best solutions to implement in order to achieve end goals.

We need someone who really understands the different tools and their application to resolving business issues – including:

  • Data architecture challenges
  • Big data toolsets, including Hadoop, R, Python, Sqoop, MongoDB, Hive, etc.
  • Relational databases – Oracle, SQL, Golden Gate
  • Data management, discovery and governance tools – Collibra, Alex
  • Data virtualisation technologies - BlueData

Your remit will be to ensure the company has the right infrastructure, tools and data backbone in place to allow the flexibility and adaptability they need, especially with a massive digital transformation taking place.

They’re looking for someone with a delivery mindset (not just theoretical) and able to establish business cases and proof of concepts around:

  • Data lakes and their warehousing strategy
  • How to make data available externally
  • Deciding the governance process and how to put it in place to enable this
  • What tech to use for replication of data

Considering the various use cases and issues around data availability and application the business looking to resolve, and understand where potential challenges might be. Challenging thinking where appropriate and providing your subject matter expertise of the Big Data technology landscape to scope out appropriate solutions for these.

With a back book of circa £150m and 70+ projects to review through, each with the ability to deliver significant value for the firm, there’s massive scope of impact.

The business has a real appetite to embrace change, and their Data community is looking to take a tool-agnostic mentality – focusing on best in class outcomes by leveraging best tools for the job.

This is also a business of significant scale – with tens of millions of customers, revenue in double digital billions per annum and a massive digital transformation under way too – with them seeing data as a significant opportunity for competitive advantage, this is a role like few others out there!
