Want the freedom to experiment?

To walk untrodden paths and help embed modern data science capabilities to a firm, you might be surprised to hear is only just building this function, despite being one of the most data rich environments in the UK.

This isn’t a case of ‘not being data centric’, far from it. They’ve already got a really well established data and insight function. They’ve just been going through significant amounts of transformational change following some M&A’s these last couple of years. But with things now settled down, they’re pushing forward with investment to modernise their data capability, and take advantage of the benefits a modern data science capability can bring.

So there’s literally hundreds of use cases to test and prove, so you’re going to be busy over the next year. That’s also how long this role is initially engaged for whilst they build and prove the capability.

In addition, you will be the embedding a newly formed team of data scientists (circa 4 reports), each looking to you for guidance and leadership.

This isn’t going to be a production line job as it’s all new. So you’re going to have a real voice in helping shape the future of what’s possible with ‘data led decisioning’. Introducing modern machine learning techniques like neural network and random forests. Helping to solve big and meaningful challenges, putting the customer at the heart of business thinking.

You’ll be playing with one of Europe’s largest and richest data ecosystems, made up of circa 34m customers, generating tens of billions of lines of code per week.

So despite being initially hired as a contract engagement, hopefully you can see there’s potential for a future here; and why wouldn’t you. Especially with this firm, where people stay an average 8 years, has seen consistent growth within their data function over the last 5 years despite the M&A’s and has a real culture of promoting from within.

So who knows what may be possible to achieve in the next 12 months. There’s only one way to find out!

Tech stacks and Tools

  • 3 data estates are about to become one, all in an AWS environment.
  • Core analysis/programming tools are R and Python. But will become tool agnostic. Leaving it to you to decide what tool would best tackle the challenge.

Job Title:             Data Science Manager – 12 month contract

Location:             Central London

Salary:                  £60,000 to £75,000 (DoE)

Benefits:             10% bonus, Pension, 25 days holiday

What you’ll bring

  • You’ve a great knowledge of modern machine learning techniques and their application in solving marketing/customer related challenges
  • You might have formally managed people before, but also may only have done coaching and mentoring and aspire to make this more formal
  • Literally any environment where you’ve been playing with massive amounts of consumer data – be it in an agency, consultancy or end client environment. But you’ve handled data science projects end to end
  • You’re comfortable articulating findings to non-technical audiences. Answering their questions and showing them the wood for the trees so they can take the right course of action
  • You’ve probably got a maths/stats degree and achieved pretty decent results
  • You love to learn new things, have an inquisitive mind, and really enjoy sharing knowledge with your team
  • You’re confident with R or Python already (maybe both)
  • SQL coding is simple for you
