Data Scientist / Game Analyst

** Mobile Games Developer – Sports **

LOCATION -                 Oxford (remote to begin with)

SALARY -                    £25k - £35k plus excellent benefits

Culture

As you often find within mobile games studios, this role offers the chance to be part of a very close knit and well established culture, applying the analytical lens to products which are constantly being optimised and improved, so the projects are ever evolving, new and interesting too! And with new titles on the horizon for launch within the next year or so, there will be even more work to do with preparing for those launches and working to develop the best possible version of that product, all supported by data and insights, driven by machine learning and traditional analytical techniques.

The culture & team

You will be brought in to support their existing Senior Data Scientist (who in themselves are a selling point, with a credible pedigree behind them in traditional insights analysis, as well as more recent experience in applying machine learning techniques to solve challenges and offer solutions)

This person is a proactive individual, often taking their own ideas for change and improvement to developers and other various stakeholders across the business, so we are looking for someone to mirror this in their approach to analysis and data science. This company hire self-starters, so even at this junior grade you would be expected to crack on with projects, identify opportunities yourself through playing the games and working with stakeholders to identify a need for analytical problem solving - adding value where you can. Of course you will also learn a huge amount from the Senior Data Scientist, and these guys really look after their employees from a development and engagement perspective – which has resulted in one of the lowest levels of churn I’ve ever come across (only 2 people have left the business in the past 10 years! So they must be doing something right!).

Projects

Projects will range across data science (this is a growth area for them), exploratory deep dive insights analysis, marketing and campaign analysis and bau reporting on game performance, player activity etc. So, a great chance to diversify your skills and experience at an early stage in your career, leaving you with lots of different opportunities further on in your career …. if you ever leave! Their technical environment means you will gain exposure to SQL and Python, with experience in the former being essential, so a level where you can build your own code from scratch (this will be tested at first stage).

Ultimately you should also be interested in working for a games developer and have a tangible interest  in sports, particularly football, as you will spend A LOT of time actually playing the games in order to understand the player perspective, in order to identifying new opportunities for projects and ways to help the games teams improve their interactions with customers.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Educated to degree level in a numerate subject; Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science
  • Proven coding experience using SQL is essential, and ideally some experience with Python for modelling and advanced analysis
  • Experience of employing statistical analytical techniques to solve problems, ideally with some experience in using machine learning techniques - this could be from University, a placement year or commercial experience
  • Strong communication skills in order to work closely with multiple stakeholders, and an interest in being ‘business facing’, working collaboratively with people
  • Interest in joining a fast paced, sociable environment, working within a small team, all hands-on deck approach!
  • An interest in football is essential
