International B2B Business Development Director – Pharmaceutical Services

Preference for UK though great applicants from East Coast US, Germany or Sweden can be considered.  The role can support a good amount of flexible working.

If you’re a highly experienced life science industry business development professional with a great track record in selling high value business to business services and you’re open to an exciting new opportunity you’ll want to hear about this role.

We’re working with a very well established, niche life science business who combine a strong, stable heritage with an innovative and smart approach to growth.  While they’ve been operating for over two decades they still have an entrepreneurial, start up feel due to the diversity of services and new markets they approach.

The part of the business we’re catering to offers high value, exceptionally patient centric consulting and services solutions.  As a relatively new (<4 years) part of the organisation this group is already highly profitable and successful with an established client base and a plethora of warm organisations just waiting or the right person to engage with effectively.

The role has arisen due to an acknowledgement that within the company’s existing network of clients and contacts there is a huge opportunity to address needs that are currently unmet.  We’re looking for someone who can effectively engage with and define needs for these companies rather than, for example, market mapping and cold calling.  Another avenue for client engagement would be networking at congresses and other relevant events.

The services on offer are complex and high value.  A typical contact will be a VP / C--suite person and they’re more likely to be working in medical, clinical or regulatory rather than a commercial function.  It’s therefore essential that you’ll come to the table with an exceptional level of credibility and an ability to have meaningful, substantive conversations with scientifically oriented people.  You’re less likely to be talking about getting a cost or margin right and more likely to be discussing how to cater a complex, niche patient care solution.

The role would be focussed on a global client base and typically you’ll be engaging with niche smaller biotechs and similarly framed drug companies.  Many of these clients will be US based and will not necessarily have an EU presence at all yet so overseas travel is absolutely part of the expectation, so having international business to business experience selling services is essential.

It’s also important to note that the nature of the team you’d be joining.  This business unit is headed by the Chief Business Officer of the company.  You’d be joining an established, high calibre team wo know their products and how to deliver them. Our client is happy consider people with a fantastic attitude and relevant, transferable competencies to build in innovation and also to give the business an opportunity to support and develop someone.

Requirements of the role include:

  • A significant life science industry background (expected to be a minimum of 10 years)
  • A track record of success in pharma business to business service selling (expected to be a minimum of 5 years) internationally.
  • Profound credibility in terms of being able to manage high level, scientific discussions at the highest level of a pharma ./ biotech business.
  • A demonstrable track record of servicing an internationally diverse client base, predominantly in Europe and the US though this is a truly global business and role.
  • Preferably from a CRO background

It would also be preferable to have:

  • A successful background working for smaller businesses where you have a multifaceted role and work at a range of levels from highly tactical to strategic.
  • A background in rare / orphan / unlicensed medicines and an understanding of highly complex, non traditional access channels.
  • Any kind of existing network in the small to medium / start up biotech sector where you could drawn on existing strong relationships.

In return our client is able to offer a role where you’d be making a really significant impact.  This role is working with the highest visibility in the organisation and while you’d have support and a great team to work with you’ll be accountable and recognised for your achievements.  The role offers an excellent opportunity for an established pharma solutions sales person to move into a fascinating new market and in the medium terms there would also be an expectation that the person taking this role would be able to build their own team.

If that sounds exciting it would be great to hear from you.
