“In God we trust, all others must bring data.” (W. Edwards Deming)

This is probably something you’ve come across before. But being a research professional, you know the data never lies.

You’ve probably handled a number of smaller projects end to end before and now looking for the next organic step. Somewhere you’ll get bigger project experience that’s rich with customer data with a deep heritage of driving decision making from it.

If this is the case, how does one of Europe’s biggest data environments suit, working for one of the biggest retailers?

THE ROLE

You’ll be one of a team of 20+ secret weapons within the customer insight function. Helping the business understand the customer truth. Making sense of a variety of data sources, bringing it all into focus. Identifying the story within and confidently articulating it to others so they can take appropriate action.

This is principally quantitative research based. Carrying out projects which look at things like periodic performance, seasonal events, giving guidance on range performance and the things which impact them. Helping to identify trends in customer behaviour and advising how to best capitalise on them.

There’s a lot of variety of project because of this. Informing the why behind what drives customer loyalty and spend. Getting into understanding why certain products within ranges are performing well vs those which maybe in decline. Helping inform ranging decisions and future trends, promotion and pricing strategies, as well as considering global and local factors which all could impact performance or future strategies.

There’s scope for adding your own flare too. You’ll be aligned to a specific set of categories, buyers and commercial teams. Building relationships with each, understanding their challenges and needs for customer insight. Through this, coupled with your own commercial awareness, you will be able to put forward ideas for new studies and projects to undertake which could add further value or unlock potential.

There’s scope for progression in role too. The business has a great heritage of internal development and it’s a large enough team to support career ambitions too. To be honest, they kind of expect it of you, since they’re hiring you at a point where you’ve probably got loads of ambition, but just want that

KEY EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

  • Relevant experience in consumer research, principally quant biased
  • Familiar with Neilsen and/or Kantar data and their self-serve tools
  • Confident Excel user
  • Able to bring together data from multiple sources, analyse it and identify trends within it. Turning that into stories with actionable recommendations
