The Data Science function is a new team within what is a very mature, large-scale business. One with over 34m customers, over 10bn lines of data a week. This role is also being hired as a 12 month fixed term engagement initially.

As a Manager within this unit will see you leading a team of 4-6 Data Scientists, and supporting the business with discovering the potential within their data through the application of modern data science techniques. This will include a lot of machine learning, with things like neural networks and random forest techniques.

They’re currently in a phase of discovery. Deciding the best strategies of implementation and ways of having biggest positive impact to the business. Testing and trailing use cases, also adopting a ‘tool agnostic’ mentality (so there’s opportunities to cross develop your technical skills on both R and Python, as well as a sea of other platforms and automation tools looking to be brought in to help support their ambition).

ABOUT THE FIRM

The company has recently brought 3 consumer facing brands together into one operational business, pooling their data to create what’s probably one of the richest data estates in the UK.

This will be cloud based and contains all relational data about their customers, including service usage, location data, service and interaction data, financial transactions, marketing and campaign data, and lots more.

We’re talking billions of lines of data each week, pertaining to multiple product offerings across the 3 consumer brands.

They’re one of the UK’s biggest marketing spenders, and this team’s outputs are to put actionable insight at the heart of the organisation. Shaping key business decisions, informing strategies and working closely with both product, digital and marketing functions.

HOW THIS ROLE LINES UP

You will be taking care of bigger picture, strategic thinking and actions of the team. Ensuring what they’re doing is correctly prioritised and will deliver the appropriate outcomes for the business. Still putting your data science skills to work, getting hands on with projects, but also dealing with business stakeholders and ensuring outputs are having a tangible impact through their adoption.

With the hands on element, this will accounts for around 40% of your time. Naturally because of the need to coach and mentor more junior members of the team, being fully conversant with the application of various Data Science techniques to solving commercial challenges is a ‘must have’ skill.

This is a 12 month fixed term contract - so what’s the risks?

Don’t be put off by the fixed term nature of this engagement. Their data team has consistently grown in recent years across BI, Reporting, Customer Insight and CRM Ops. evolving to meet the growing demand for data from the firm.

The Data Science team is new, but also represents such massive potential to drive value. So their initial structure of 3 managers is highly likely to need to grow and evolve once the sea of use cases are proven, and the data science capability expands to support the business further.

What’s the USP’s?

  • Real opportunity to drive results. They’re still at the start of their journey and there’s lots of things to test and learn from
  • The opportunity to shape and develop a new team
  • An incredibly data rich environment – one which has granular information about their customers, with a proper relationship over time showing detailed behaviours, interests and insights which can be successfully leveraged in analysis projects – this role’s for you
  • It’s a firm with a great reputation. One which will definitely add to anyone’s CV
  • A business people like working for. Their average tenure is 8+ years due to high employee satisfaction
