Role: Head of Marketing – direct response marketing
Location: Camberley, Surrey – office based 3 days a week
Salary: £70,000 to £80,000 (based on experience) plus benefits

When you’re judging opportunities, would you rather fill dead man’s shoes, or walk into something greenfield?

If your ambition with your next opportunity is to have something you’re able to build, this is it.

Whilst not completely greenfield (as there are some channels in play), there’s lots more to open, test and scale.

To begin with you’ll be handling a direct response programme which will include DRTV, paid social and some paid search. But this needs expanding upon, both in terms of testing in other paid social channels as well as direct mail, inserts, etc.

Another part of your role will include some web dev. Essentially the current site will be going through an overhaul, and eventually likely a full replacement further down the line. You will get involved in elements of all of this. Considering lead to conversion journeys for customers and site performance. Ensuring what’s created compliments from being able to capture leads, measurement of channel attribution, etc.

The product you’ll be marketing is pre-paid funeral planning. This is a subscription based business model operating under FCA regulation, similar to life assurance plans. In recent years there’s been an explosion of growth in this market vertical and the business you’ll be joining might be new entrants to this market. But they own the last mile and are well positioned to deliver a comprehensive range of propositions which meet a variety of customer needs.

You’re going to have around a £5 million marketing spend at your disposal for this year, and there’s more in the tank available providing you’re able to keep a close handle on the CPA rate.

You’re going to start your journey here with the support of a team of 2, with the ability to grow this as the marketing programme extends and specialist hires become necessary for things like CRM, for example. There’s also going to be agency support for creative and specialist services.

Your report line will be to the owners of the wider business (the company is in 2 parts. One very established and P&L profitable, what you'll be handling is a complimentary new business line they're growing) and you’ll have support of a highly experienced contractor for a period to support your entry to the business and get you up to speed on the marketing programme in play.

You'll need to be an analytical and commercial leader with experience in managing offline performance marketing programmes with some knowledge and experience in digital too.

Key Experience Necessary

  • Solid offline direct response marketing credentials with credible DRTV experience and a great handle on the end to end of this. Targeting, media plan, creative, measurement and optimisation
  • Knowledge of direct mail, paid social as well as other on and offline direct response media channels
  • Experience with the setup and build side of performance based marketing programmes
  • Good team management skills and really solid communication
  • Robust thinker, able to build strategies backed by data and insight. But also comfortable taking on a role that’s going to need you to get your hands dirty in operational day to day, like you’d expect in a start-up type environment
  • Results focused. With an astute focus on measurement and optimisation of campaigns
  • Experienced in budgetary and agency management – particularly working with media and creative agencies
  • Any experience in subscriptions based, or regulated industry businesses a real plus

Must be able to live and work in the UK unrestricted.
